Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like standard physical horror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?
