The Fast-Food Giant Removes Artificial Intelligence Holiday Commercial In the Wake of Online Criticism.
The global fast-food chain has pulled a holiday commercial made with generative AI following encountering widespread criticism on social media.
The short ad was created via generative AI clips and was originally uploaded on the YouTube channel for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.
Audience Response and Removal
Soon after it aired, audiences online criticized the employment of AI in the advert. Many labeled it "disturbing" and "awkwardly stitched together".
"This incident serves as an important lesson as we explore the proper application of generative technology," commented a spokesperson from the company.
The commercial was produced for McDonald's by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It showed a series of things that often go badly over the Christmas break, using the tagline "the worst time of the year".
A Growing Phenomenon of AI in Advertising
Campaigns that feature AI-created content have become a rising phenomenon among major brands, notably for the holiday season.
- Another beverage giant has recently released back-to-back AI-generated Christmas commercials.
- Technical Challenges: Because videos produced using generative AI are more likely to become unstable the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be about six to 10 seconds in length.
- Broader Implications: The video also sparked fears about the replacement of human roles in the production sector, with some observers noting it could reduce opportunities for camera crews.
Defense from the Production Company
Following the video's removal, a producer's head, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the advert.
According to her, the development took "over a month and a half" and involved generating "countless iterations" which were then edited in post-production "in the same way we would on any standard production".
"This was not an AI trick," Bridge asserted. "We consider it a finished piece."
Mixed Audience Sentiment
While the Dutch McDonald's ad was predominantly criticized, the sentiment for other AI-assisted holiday ads has been varied.
For instance, a recent AI-generated holiday ad from Coca-Cola according to analysis received a 61% "positive sentiment rating" from online commenters.
However, various brands have likewise received criticism for employing AI in advertising. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that some described as "cheap" and "uncanny".
The episode underscores the continuing debate within the marketing and production sectors about the trade-off between technological innovation and human craftsmanship.
