From Praise to Fury: Conservative Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Release is Mixed.
Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of documents related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration representatives defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and image appear in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about what may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans immediately called for greater transparency.
“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a future legislature may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure
However, some conservative commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces obscured.
But a few do not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed certain rightwing figures to launch the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left wrongly accused President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
However, overall comment on the right was relatively muted after the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud calls for transparency that came before the congressional approval to enact a bill requiring the files' release.
Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that contained no new data.
