European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
